"Never lose an opportunity of seeing anything that is beautiful;
for beauty is God's handwriting - a wayside sacrament.
Welcome it in every fair face, in every fair sky,
in every fair flower,
and thank God for it as a cup of blessing."
... Ralph Waldo Emerson ...

one early morning after coffee and cereal
we set out for our favorite lake.
slipping our kayaks into the wet
we set off .. paddling on the perimeter
of the deep then venturing toward the middle.
viewing deer, ducks, and flying things
in the still of the early hour.
remaining silent save for the lapping of our paddles,
we whispered awe, treasuring one another's
company this fine day.
ten-months into retirement life ..
we're busier than before with always
something to do on our property:
inside .. and outside .. our home.
one day blends into the next.
we're purposing to take a day or two
out of our week, in addition to Sunday,
to rest and just *be*.
i've long said,
"one cannot give from an empty cup."
it's still true today. perhaps more so in these uncertain times.
and so we refresh our spirits as required,
seeking the cleansing and refilling from the
One who loves the deepest.
an hour & a half later we concluded our trip around the lake
making our way to the shoreline, exiting the kayaks
and setting them to rights in our vehicle.
times like this we're thankful to still own the
suburban assault vehicle.
this lake is about 9 miles from our front door..
on the way home we decided to go to town
and have brunch at the tiny local diner,
noshing on the day's breakfast special,
enjoying the out of doors edging the town square.
..sweet morning..

So lovely!!
ReplyDeleteI am taking notes from your retirement plans (only a couple of years to go for us, Lord willing). I think there is such wisdom in planning some time for rest and restoration.
it's easy to get caught up in projects to the point the week has flown by and you've not rested one bit. we don't always succeed with the whole rest intent, but we try. ;)
DeleteI love the way you are embracing your 'new' life! We've talked about embracing more rest and quiet time when we're at home. I love your plan. Our times away with our cabin-on-wheels always remind us that there is so much beauty in God's creation to enjoy. Perhaps we'll have to follow your lead. Kayaks could be in our future. My sweetheart would love to take them to Alaska - when, if, we ever are able to go north.

simple is best. always...
DeleteSounds like an amazing morning out on the water. I was just telling Sean that maybe in a couple years when all the pandemic buyers start selling their kayaks off we can score a couple. 😄
ReplyDeletethey're a hot commodity for sure right now!!! sheesh. we were thrilled to find these at a store worthy of a full day trip. even on craigslist they're too high priced and not always in great shape. we really lucked out.
DeleteAs I kept reading your delightful morning, I could feel your contentment.
ReplyDeletethe sweet quiet .. takes me away.
DeleteHow delightful, every bit of it. I can sense your peace.
ReplyDeletehonestly, i never thought i'd enjoy it as much as i do.
